Jazz musician drawing

Last month I visited New Orleans and had a chance to spend two nights on Frenchman Street in the world famous French Quarter. Frenchman Street is famous for its eclectic mix of live music happening nightly, late into the night. Perfect for me to put the kids to bed and get out to experience the […]

I haven’t blogged about sketch night at the Society of Illustrators in quite a while, but last night was such a great session that I wanted to share. The models were outfitted in elaborate, authentic Chinese headdresses and contemporary clothing as they performed a fashion-inspired version of the Chinese folktale Mulan. Directed by fashion designer David […]

The most fun I’ve had this political season was live drawing the first presidential debate. The faces, poses, hand gestures, reactions…it’s all too much! Here are a few from Monday’s debate.

[sgmb id=”1″]As some of you know my drawings appear on Crooked Fingers’s release Breaks in the Armor as well as the acoustic version of the same album. Crooked Fingers aka Eric Bachmann has been one of my favorite artists for years (since I was in high school!) and last night I was happy to attend a special performance […]

I was commissioned by Bloomingdales to ‘live-paint’ portraits of their customers. It was so nice to see their clients’ faces when they saw their likenesses appearing on paper. I don’t often talk about art with people who are not artists and it amazed me how impressed and fascinated they are by the process of creating art. […]

One of my very favorite bands the Jazz Butcher aka the Jazz Butcher Conspiracy played at the Ludlow Street venue The Cake Shop and I was one of the few devotees in attendance…but all the better. For an all-but-unknown band they are incredible song writers and the music perfectly matches the writing…have a listen and […]

Last night’s fashion drawing session with @bildonovan @soi128 @offenbad
Views from my home yesterday.
If you watched my #igtv vid, here is the finished #drawing
My first #drawingvideo on Instagram. Full disclosure, this is sped up 😉 I can draw fast but not that fast. Swipe for the finished #drawing
“1-minutes” are what these short poses are sometimes called. They’re great for capturing body language and design. What I find is that they tend to be honest and instinctual. Less time to think and only time to react. It’s great exercise for the mind and hand.
Happy New Year!
